The dark side of spirituality no one wants to talk about
When the topic of spirituality is broached, generally it is more positive connotations that come more readily to mind. What one tends to think about are things along the lines of meditation, mindfulness, issues of raised consciousness, obtaining nirvana or enlightenment, or a plethora of concepts pertaining to developing religious spirituality. We have taken to being under the assumption that more spiritually mature individuals practice things like yoga, and are more health conscious, choosing to eat organic plant based diets. It is notions such as these that have made the topic a popularized and trending issue in what could be described as new age spiritualism. While spirituality does in fact encompass all of these things, this optimistic take on the subject matter in question is more of romanticized version of what real spirituality really entails. The truth of the matter is that what we call spirituality is not all unicorns and rainbows as we tend to think it to be. Rather, there is a dark side to spirituality that we avoid, and that no one wants to talk about. This is perhaps best highlighted in the expression that someone is a spiritual warrior. Why on earth would someone that is attempting to live a life of peace and bliss need to be a warrior of any kind?
