On the hierarchy of celestial beings: The nine choirs of angels

Angels play a substantial role in our sacred texts. The name angel is associated with God’s, ‘messengers.” This significant role placed on angels is found in the many main religions found the world over. Of all the differences that can be found in each one of these religions, the topic of angels are one of the similarities that they all have in common. We even have instances where the same angels are illustrated and described in these different texts. In the Christian bible alone, there are over three hundred and sixty five references to angels found throughout the voluminous book. Arguably the most well-known angel is found in the form of Archangel Micheal who so famously rebuked Satan. The Angel of the Lord conveyed to Mary and Joseph the coming of the Messiah Jesus Christ, and in this context we see how angels act as messengers (it is believed that the angel of the Lord that visited them was that of Archangel Gabriel who is not only one of the three mentioned Archangels in the Bible, but believed to be God’s messengers as his name would imply). We find that Isiah encountered Seraphim, and Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by two angels of the Lord.
